Itinerary

Tueasday 9th July 2013

Depart London Luton on Easyjet flight 2295 leaving 06:45 and arriving at Keflavik at 08:45. We will be met at airport by hire car company and then drive our vehicle to our accommodation at Kex Hostel in Reykjavik. Time to explore the centre of Reykjavik in the afternoon and evening. You can see some photos from our August 2012 trip on our Gallery or Facebook page.

Wednesday 10th July 2013

Leave Reykjavik and do the famous Golden Circle tour which includes Þingvellir, Gullfoss and the Strokkur Geyser. Þingvellir was the site of the first parliament but is also a great place to see the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Gullfoss waterfall is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland and if the sun is out you get a rainbow over the waterfall due to the amount of spray the waterfall produces. Stokkur is the most reliable Geysir in Iceland, shooting water 20 metres into the air every 4-8 minutes. The even larger Geysir shoots water up to 70 metres into the air but does so rarely. At the end of the tour we will head to our new accommodation at Selfoss Hostel which has a hot tub that guests are free to use.

Thursday 11th July 2013

Leave Selfoss hostel and drive to Landmannalaugar on mountain F road (we will have 4WD vehicle suitable for this road). Landmannalaugar is a popular hiking destination both for day trippers wanting to see the multi coloured Rhyolite mountains and those wanting to do the famous multi day Laugavegur trail which starts here and ends at Þórsmörk. Our day walk will provide you with some great views of the multi coloured mountains and lava fields and there is even a natural hot spring close to the car park if you want to pack a bathing costume. At the end of the walk we will drive to our accommodation at Hvoll hostel which will be our new accommodation for the next few nights.

Friday 12th July 2013

Our walk today will be in Skaftafell National Park. After parking at the visitor centre we will lead a long scenic route that will include Svartifoss waterfall and the summit of Kristínartindar (Christine’s peak) which is 1126 metres high. Return to accommodation at Hvoll.

Saturday 13th July

Today you have a choice of options with MoutainGuides which are not included in our trip price:

  1. Glacier Adventure – 4 hours Glacier Hike on Crampons on Svínafellsjökull, part of the great Vatnajökull Glacier in Skaftafell National Park. Cost ISK 10500 (approx £54.00)
  2. Full day Glacier Adventure – A full day hike (7 hours) on the ice field of Svínafellsjökull, part of the Vatnajökull Glacier in Skaftafell National Park. Cost ISK 16900 (approx £84.00)
  3. If you want to save money you can take this as a rest day and stay back at Hvoll hostel.

Sunday 14th July 2013

Leave Hvoll hostel for the last time and drive to Jökulsárlón for views of the amazing icebergs. You can either just photograph them from the shore or if you want you can take a boat tour which gets you slightly closer, explains more about the lagoon and also gives you the chance to eat ice from an iceberg. The cost of the boat tour is an additional ISK 3500 (approx £17.00). At end of day drive back to Reykjavik for another 2 nights at Kex Hostel.

Monday 15th July 2013

We will visit the famous Blue Lagoon for some relaxing in the hot waters, perhaps applying some bright blue silica mud. Entry costs €35.00 (£28.00) and you can stay as long as you wish. We will return to Reykjavik and you have the chance to explore the city some more.

Tuesday 16th July 2013

Leave Kex hostel early to drive to the airport where Gary will drop you in time for your Easyjet flight 2296 which leaves at 09:25 and will get you back to London Luton at 13:20.
